Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Ferrara.
From 1986 to 1996 he is Director of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Federico II University of Naples.
From 1991 to 1994 he is Director of the School of Specialization in Ophthalmology of the 2nd Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Naples and from 1994 to 1996 he is also Director of the Clinical Care Department of Ophthalmology.
Since 1996 he has directed the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Ferrara and since 1999 he is Director of the School of Specialization in Ophthalmology for the same University. Still in Ferrara he is Director of the Department of Medical and Surgical Disciplines of Communication and Behavior from 1999 to 2001 and Director of the Department of Specialist Surgery of the Hospital-University Structure from 2000 to 2001.
He becomes President of the Degree Course in Orthoptics-Ophthalmological Assistance of the University of Ferrara from 2002 to 2007 and since 2009 to the present.
He is Referee ECM for the Ministry of Health from 2003 to 2004, Referee COFIN MIUR for the Ministry of Education, University and Research in 2004, Referee CIVR in 2005 and Referee PRIN from 2007 to 2008.
Dean of the Medical and Surgery School of the University of Ferrara from 2001 to 2007, he is a member of the Technical-Scientific Committee for the establishment of the Medical and Surgery School of the University of Salerno from 2006 to 2012.
He is President of S.T.U.E.M.O. Company (Società Tosco-Umbro-Emiliano Marchigiana di Oftalmologia) from 2009 to 2012 and Scientific Coordinator of the Scientific Research Program in 2009 and 2013. He is Delegate to Health on behalf of the Dean of the University of Ferrara from 2010 to 2015 and Delegate to the Memorandum of Understanding between University and Emilia Romagna Region in 2015.
Topics of particular scientific interest: treatment of myopia and astigmatism with excimer laser, study of the biological effects of the excimer laser on the ocular structures, medical therapy of glaucoma, pharmacogenetic studies of blood coagulation in neovascular retinal diseases.
Author of over 260 publications on the most important international scientific journals.
He collaborates with the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh, the Ophthalmology Clinic of Bonn and the Ophthalmology Clinic of Cape Town for relevant international scientific activities.
He is expert for the evaluation of degree courses for the Ministry of University and Research and Referee of the same Ministry for the evaluation of national research projects and research quality in Italy.
