Prof. Alessandro Chiarucci

Full Professor at Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna since 2014, where he directs the BIOME Lab (BIOdiversity and Macroecology) and the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences.
He is President of the Italian Botanical Society and author of numerous scientific publications. Botanist and ecologist with research activities focused on patterns of species diversity. His research mission is to understand patterns and processes of species coexistence in relation to spatial and temporal scales and to improve approaches taken to biodiversity conservation. His management approach is to promote community-based decision making for strategic development. He collaborates in international theoretical, empirical and applied research projects. He views Science as contributing to a better, peaceful and healthy world for humans and other organisms living on Earth.

1997: Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Siena, Italy, with a thesis on “Ecology, Diversity and Conservation of the ‘serpentine’ plant communities of Tuscany” (National Committee for Ecological Assessment of the University of Genoa).1990: Master’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Siena (highest mark and cum laude).
2021: Director of the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Alma Mater Studiorum -University of Bologna
2014: Full Professor of Applied and Environmental Botany, Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna.
2005: Associate Professor of Applied and Environmental Botany, University of Siena.
2001: University Researcher in Plant Ecology, University of Siena.
1995: Curator of Herbarium, University of Siena.
